Notes from Viewfore

Guides for getting your tree onto the map, and what changed in Viewfore and why.

  1. Updates

Watch your family's migration on a map, year by year

We redesigned the map Timeline. Press play and see where your family lived each year, who moved, and when they crossed an ocean.

  2. Updates

A fix for family tree files that would not load

One invisible character in a note could stop a whole GEDCOM file from loading. That is fixed. If your file was turned away, please try it again.

  3. Updates

Historical place names now land where they should

A place written the way it was named at the time, like Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America, now lands in the right spot on the map. Viewfore knows about 300 historical and regional names, and a vague place gets a clearly marked approximate pin.

  4. Guides

How to export a GEDCOM from Ancestry

Ancestry keeps your tree, but it will hand you a copy as a GEDCOM file in a few clicks. Here is where the button is, what the file holds, and what to do with it.

  5. Updates

Story mode plays your family history as a film over the map

Press play and the map tells one family's story, a marriage at a time, from the oldest wedding down to the person you started from. Every sentence comes from your file. It is in beta.

  6. Updates

Notes, sources, and record facts are now on the person card

Genealogists keep their work in notes and citations. Viewfore now reads them from the file and shows them behind a document button on the person card, grouped by the fact they support.

  7. Updates

A new example family, built for the map

The example tree is now a fictional family of 824 people written to show what Viewfore does well. Nobody in it is real.

  8. Updates

    Viewfore is open

Upload a GEDCOM and see your family tree on a map, with pedigree, fan, lifespan, and insights views beside it. Viewing is free. Sharing a tree by link or embed is the only thing that costs money.
